Breast Reduction, also known Reduction Mammoplasty, is a procedure used to reduce the size of large breasts. These can be the cause of symptoms of backache, neck pain and painful grooves in the shoulders from bra straps which, in many cases, can cause psychological distress. In some women, the problem can prevent them from taking part in active sports or give them a feeling of self-consciousness due to comments from others. Often, women with large breasts complain that it is difï¬cuit to wear fashionable clothes.
The reduction procedure is an operation which removes excess fat and skin from the breasts. They are then reshaped and the nipples are repositioned to form smaller breasts. Before undergoing the procedure there are various pros and cons to consider. Some of the disadvantages that occur after a breast reduction are desensitising and numbness of the nipples and a certain amount of scarring around the areola.
Women are often unable to breast feed their babies since the nipples are actually separated from the underlying milk ducts For most women, however, the beneï¬ts of reducing the breast size far outweigh the disadvantages. A reduction mammoplasty can also be used to correct asymmetry where one breast may be considerably larger than the other.
